Mars stands for physical and mental energy, courage, assertiveness, ambition, and the raw drive to act. It governs how you compete, defend yourself, and push through obstacles. In the family Mars signifies siblings, particularly younger brothers. It also rules land and property, real estate, and matters connected with the military, police, engineers, surgeons, and athletes.
A strong, well-placed Mars gives courage, discipline, and the stamina to finish what you start. A poorly placed or afflicted Mars can show as anger, impatience, accidents, or conflict. Mars is a natural malefic, so its energy needs direction; channelled well it builds, channelled badly it destroys.
Strength, Day, Gem, and Manglik Dosha
Mars is exalted in Capricorn, where its drive becomes disciplined, and debilitated in Cancer, the opposite point, where its energy feels uneasy. It owns two signs: Aries and Scorpio. It rules Tuesday and is linked with the colour red. Its gemstone is the red coral.
Mars is also tied to the well-known Manglik dosha (also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha). When Mars sits in certain houses from the ascendant, Moon, or Venus—commonly the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th—a person is called Manglik, and tradition links this to friction in marriage. In practice the effect is often overstated and can be reduced by various factors, so a Manglik placement should be read carefully in the full chart, not treated as a verdict.
