The zodiac is a band of twelve signs, called rashis in Sanskrit, that wraps around the sky. Every planet, at any moment, sits in one of them. The sign gives a planet its flavour: the same Moon feels patient in Taurus and restless in Aries. This lesson introduces all twelve rashis, the three ways astrologers classify them, the planet that rules each one, and the common beginner mix-up between a sign and a house.
The Twelve Rashis at a Glance
Each sign spans 30 degrees of the zodiac, and together they cover the full 360-degree circle. Here is the one-line nature of each.
Aries (Mesha) — bold, direct, eager to start. Taurus (Vrishabha) — steady, sensual, fond of comfort. Gemini (Mithuna) — curious, talkative, quick-minded. Cancer (Karka) — caring, protective, emotional. Leo (Simha) — confident, generous, drawn to the spotlight. Virgo (Kanya) — precise, practical, service-minded. Libra (Tula) — balanced, social, seeking fairness. Scorpio (Vrishchika) — intense, secretive, deeply focused. Sagittarius (Dhanu) — optimistic, philosophical, freedom-loving. Capricorn (Makara) — disciplined, ambitious, patient. Aquarius (Kumbha) — independent, inventive, humanitarian. Pisces (Meena) — gentle, imaginative, compassionate.
Elements and Modalities
Signs are sorted in two useful ways. The four elements describe their basic temperament. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are energetic and inspired. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are grounded and practical. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are mental and social. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are emotional and intuitive.
The three modalities describe how a sign acts. Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) initiate and start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold steady and resist change. Dual signs, also called common or mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), adapt and bridge. Every sign is one element and one modality, and that pairing alone tells you a great deal about its character.
The Ruling Planets
In classical Vedic astrology each sign has a planetary ruler that acts as its owner. The Sun rules Leo; the Moon rules Cancer. Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
Knowing the ruler matters because the planet carries the affairs of the sign wherever it goes in the chart. If Libra falls on your house of career, then Venus, the ruler of Libra, becomes a key planet for your work. Note that traditional Jyotish uses these seven planetary rulers and does not assign signs to Rahu, Ketu, or the outer planets the way some modern systems do.
Sign Versus House: Avoiding the Mix-Up
Beginners often blur signs and houses, so it is worth being clear. A sign is a fixed segment of the zodiac that describes a quality of energy. A house is a section of your personal chart that describes an area of life. The signs are the same for everyone on a given day; the houses depend on your exact birth time and place.
A helpful image: the signs are the seasons, the same overhead for the whole city, while the houses are the rooms of your particular home. A planet is described by the sign it occupies (its mood) and located by the house it sits in (the part of life it affects). Sun-sign horoscopes use only your sign, which is why a full Vedic chart, built on houses, gives a far more personal reading.
Key takeaways
- The zodiac has twelve rashis, each spanning 30 degrees, and every planet always sits in one of them.
- Signs are grouped by four elements (fire, earth, air, water) and three modalities (movable, fixed, dual).
- Each sign has a ruling planet; some planets rule two signs—Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn each rule a pair.
- A sign describes a quality of energy; a house describes an area of life, and houses depend on your exact birth time.
- Classical Jyotish uses seven planetary rulers and does not assign signs to Rahu, Ketu, or the outer planets.
